The School Crest and Motto were created in the year 1978. The tale of how this came about is recounted to us by Br Adolph Pinto, who was stationed in St Augustine’s School in that year.

Br Christy Murphy took over as principal from Br Peter Gomes in 1978. As sports day approached it was realised that certificates needed to be printed. Br Adolph and Br Greg Fernandes,at very short notice, were given the task to create a school crest and motto so that these could be used to print respectable certificates.
Br Fernandes was the artist and largely responsible for designing the crest.
The motto “Service before Self” was chosen by both of them.
An indication of the hurry involved in getting the certificates ready is illustrated by a mistake that the printer made when the job was given to him. Br Adolph tells us,that in his haste, he printed the first set of certificates with motto “Service Be For Self” !!
That error was duly rectified and the rest,as we say, is history.
Some more history – a staff photo from the year 1979 with Br Adolph and Br Greg in the last row (alongside Br Larry).

(Thanks to Br Adolph for giving us the historical origins of the School Crest and Motto)
