Independence day celebrations have always been a highlight of the Secondary school year at St Augustine’s. This year has been no different. The students and teachers of class 8 began their practice sessions a week ago.
15th August dawned bright and beautiful with a hint of rain in the air. Hence it was decided that the boys would remain in their classes and only the students of the two classes facing the Edmund Rice statue would line up on the corridors. The national tricolor was hoisted by our principal ,Br Anish . After saluting the flag and singing the national anthem, the boys presented a short but extremely meaningful program. Aditya Chakraborty, accompanied by Krist D’souza on the keyboard, then performed a most beautifully sung rendition of the patriotic song“ Mera Mulk,Mera Desh”. Ryan Miranda spoke about the need for creating leaders in school. He exhorted the boys to equip themselves with skills and values needed for good leaders. Sameer Patel too gave an inspiring speech in Hindi. Prayers for special intentions for the nation were said. Br Anish told the boys to pray for the less fortunate of our land who faced a daily struggle for existence. Finally the program ended with the recitation of Rabindranath Tagore’s poem “Where the mind is without fear” by Jason Gonsalves. The heavens opened up in rain at the end to bless the fluttering tricolor marking the end of the celebrations at school.
