Chariots of Fire in St Augustine’s

Senior citizens and those heading in that direction may remember a multiple Oscar award winning 1981 movie called Chariots of Fire. It told the true story of two great runners who took part in the 1924 Olympics in Paris.

Well another Chariots of Fire type of fierce competition between two great runners has been unfolding in our very own school.

There has been a very close contest between Nigel D’souza (10C Whiting House) and Adrian D’silva (10A Gomes House) in the four main long distance races of Sports 2023.

First there was the Cross Country Race: Nigel beat Adrian to 2nd place in this race – details here..

After that we had three long distance races in our school – the 800m,1500m and 3000m races.

The 400m track on our school field has a nice grass cover on it this year so there is no dust being kicked up for a change.

In the 800m race Adrian took the honours and wrested 1st place from Nigel.

Nigel then fought back in the 1500 m race and beat Adrian to second place.

Some photos from these two races below…

The last of the long distance races, the 3000 m race began with Nigel on two gold medals (Cross country and 1500m) and Adrian on one gold medal ( 800m) The 3000 m race would decide who was going to be the best long distance runner of the SSC batch of 2024.The run took place early morning just as the sun was rising.

The assembled students had the opportunity to witness a glorious contest between two really good runners.Nigel led the field for the entire race and it looked like he was going to win. However Adrian somehow found a burst of speed at the end and to the everlasting delight of the ecstatically cheering Gomes House supporters, became the one to breast the tape first.

When the dust settled and the tears of joy and disappointment had been shed the final result was clearly seen. Two gold and two silver medals each was their final tally. Both were winners.Congratulations to both of you.Hope to see you representing India at the Olympics someday.
